Greek nationals living and working in the United Arab Emirates may be eligible for a UAE Tax Residency Certificate (TRC) issued by the Federal Tax Authority (FTA), provided they meet the applicable UAE tax residency requirements.
A UAE tax residency certificate Greece search often reflects two concerns: establishing tax residency in the UAE and understanding whether that status is recognised in Greece. These are separate matters, particularly when applying for benefits under a Double Taxation Agreement (DTA).
What Is a UAE Tax Residency Certificate?
A Tax Residency Certificate is an official document issued by the FTA confirming an individual’s UAE tax residency for a specified period. It can be requested for domestic purposes or to support a claim under an applicable tax treaty.
The certificate serves as evidence of tax residency when dealing with foreign tax authorities, financial institutions, and other organisations. However, it does not automatically cancel tax obligations in another country. For a broader explanation of the certificate, its purpose and eligibility, read our guide to the UAE Tax Residency Certificate.
UAE Tax Residency Certificate Requirements for Greek Nationals
Greek nationality does not prevent an individual from qualifying as a UAE tax resident under domestic legislation. Cabinet Decision No. 85 of 2022 and Ministerial Decision No. 27 of 2023 provide three routes for individuals to establish tax residency:
- 183-day rule: Spending at least 183 days in the UAE during a consecutive 12-month period. The days do not need to be consecutive.
- 90-day rule: Spending at least 90 days in the UAE during a consecutive 12-month period, holding a valid UAE residence permit, and having a permanent home or employment or business activities in the country.
- Primary residence and centre of interests: Having the usual or primary residence and centre of financial and personal interests in the UAE. Employment, business activities, family relationships and financial connections may support this position.
The FTA assesses the applicant’s circumstances and supporting evidence. A residence visa alone does not establish tax residency. For more detail on the relevant criteria, see our guide to the domestic Tax Residency Certificate in the UAE.
Documents Required for a UAE TRC Application
Documentation depends on the eligibility route and the certificate’s intended purpose. Greek nationals applying for a domestic certificate may need:
- Passport and Emirates ID, where applicable.
- Official UAE entry and exit report.
- Employment contract, salary certificate or proof of business activity, where relevant.
- Tenancy agreement, title deed or other proof of permanent residence.
- Evidence of financial and personal interests in the UAE when relying on the centre-of-interests route.
For treaty-purpose applications, the FTA requires a passport and/or Emirates ID with an official entry and exit report, proof of UAE income or salary where applicable, and any additional evidence required by the relevant agreement. The UAE tax residency certificate Greece application should therefore be prepared according to the certificate’s intended use, not just the applicant’s nationality.
How to Apply for a UAE Tax Residency Certificate
The UAE TRC application process takes place through the FTA’s online service using EmaraTax.
Applicants must:
- Log in to their EmaraTax account.
- Open Other Services and select Tax Residency Certificate.
- Provide their Corporate Tax TRN, if applicable, or select the no-TRN option.
- Choose domestic or treaty purposes.
- Select the relevant country for a treaty application.
- Upload supporting documents and pay the applicable fees.
- Submit the application for FTA review.
Once approved, the digital certificate becomes available for download and is sent to the applicant’s registered email address. Applicants should check the requirements of the relevant treaty before selecting the certificate type.
UAE Tax Residency Certificate Cost and Processing Time
According to the FTA service page, updated on October 22, 2026, the current fees are:
| Service | Fee |
|---|
| Application submission | AED 50 |
| Electronic certificate for an FTA registrant with a Corporate Tax TRN | AED 500 |
| Electronic certificate for an unregistered individual | AED 1,000 |
| Printed certificate | AED 250 per copy |
The FTA generally takes 10 business days to process a complete application. A printed certificate requires an additional five business days after payment. Fees are non-refundable if the FTA rejects an application.
A certificate can cover a selected tax period or another 12 months. It cannot cover a future period that has not started or extend beyond 12 months. Applicants should also consider the benefits of a UAE Tax Residency Certificate when assessing how the document may support their personal or business requirements.
UAE-Greece Double Taxation Agreement: Important Considerations
The UAE-Greece Double Taxation Agreement is currently in force. After its original ten-year term expired in December 2024, both countries agreed to continue its application. Greece ratified the continuation through Law No. 5228/2025, and it entered into force on September 18, 2025, with continuity from the earlier expiry date.
However, Greek nationals should understand an important treaty restriction. Article 4, as amended by the 2013 Protocol, defines an individual resident of the UAE for treaty purposes as someone domiciled in the UAE who also holds UAE nationality. Therefore, a Greek citizen may qualify as a UAE tax resident under domestic legislation and obtain a domestic TRC without necessarily qualifying as a UAE resident under this treaty definition.
A UAE tax residency certificate application should not be treated as an automatic route to treaty benefits. The applicant’s circumstances and the relevant treaty provisions require separate assessment. Our guide to the UAE Tax Residency Certificate for treaty purposes explains the distinction between domestic and treaty applications.
Does a UAE TRC End Greek Tax Residency?
No. Obtaining a UAE certificate does not automatically change an individual’s tax status in Greece.
Under Article 4 of Greece’s Income Tax Code, a person may remain a Greek tax resident if their permanent or principal home, habitual abode, or centre of vital interests is in Greece. Spending more than 183 days there during 12 months can also establish Greek tax residency, subject to the applicable legal exception.
Greek nationals moving to the UAE should follow the Greek tax authority’s residency-transfer procedure and retain evidence of their relocation. A UAE certificate alone does not complete this process.
